"ICES Colombo is not just central to Sri Lankan debates in the social sciences, it is one of a handful of institutions that catalyzes thinking in the global south.
It is extraordinary vibrant place; dozens of major international intellectuals pass through here every year. And yet, even after twenty years, we didn’t have an internationally published, refereed journal that reflected our scholarly conversations.
When Radhika Coomaraswamy, Sunil Bastin and I sat down and took stock one day, we agreed this was huge gap, a need to be met. The challenge was enormous: 24/7 availability and 24 shipment for Euro-American readers, and an affordable price for readers in Sri Lanka and Global South, who can’t pay dollar prices for serious scholarship. A Journal meeting the highest international standards, but yet contributing to a critical or even radical social science, a project that our founder Neelan Thiruchelvam
held so dear to his heart.
We had dream an impossible dream, conceptualize a project that had never ever been actualized. Domains isn’t about easy interdicisplinarity. It isn’t so much about blurred boundaries,
as much as it is about the synergistic overlap of areas. It is about expanding the reach of our own zone, and letting others, situated elsewhere, reach us. It is about taking different Domains, and making them work together, so that we can unlock their value.
